The Bear Valley Unified School District, which serves nearly 3,000 students in seven schools throughout the Big Bear area in San Bernardino County, celebrated the grand opening of its new compressed natural gas station (CNG) on October 29. The MSRC contributed $250,000 in Clean Transportation Funding to this project to help build the station and modify the District's maintenance facilities to accommodate CNG school buses. On average CNG bus fueling costs are 25 to 45 percent less than a gallon of diesel gasoline and they reduce greenhouse gas emissions that cause global warming by 20-23 percent when compared with diesel buses.
MSRC Chair Greg Pettis was on-hand to participate in the ribbon cutting ceremony and delivered featured remarks during the program. He gave special praise for the District's progressive environmental policies and its cultivation of a successful partnership with the MSRC over the last several years. The fascinating story of how the MSRC and Bear Valley USD formed such a great partnership to save money and improve air quality will be featured in the upcoming Winter edition of the MSRC's e-newsletter Clean Air Roadmap.
