The City of La Quinta is an active supporter of environmental protection programs and is committed to taking an active role in the purchase and use of alternative fuel vehicles. The purchase of compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles helps reduce emissions in the City as well as the Coachella Valley, thus preserving the areas unique and sensitive desert environment.

To obtain the best pricing, the City was able to piggyback on a State of California contract for CNG vans.
objective of the project was to purchase a Dodge Ram 8-passenger van with a 5.4L 200 hp CNG engine. The vehicle has a life expectancy of five years based upon an estimated 10,000 miles per year. The vehicle will be used as a City pool vehicle.
The CNG van was delivered on May 9, 2002. Unfortunately, the van malfunctioned and was not operable and was transported to the local Dodge dealership for repairs. Upon return to the City, the van was immediately placed into service and has experienced no further operational problems. La Quinta currently operates several CNG-powered vehicles and is impressed by their superior performance, especially in the intense desert heat.
