The City of Costa Mesa supports the goal of clean air and a healthier environment through the reduction of air pollution from motor vehicles. To this end, the City desired to replace two gasoline-powered vehicles that had reached the end of their useful life with alternative fuel vehicles.

The City of Costa Mesa advertised a competitive bid for the two vehicles, subsequently awarding the contract to two different vendors.
The objective of the project was to replace two (2) gasoline powered pick-up trucks with two liquid natural gas (LNG) vehicles.
The trucks have been placed into service. The first vehicle to be replaced was a 1979 Ford F-700, 1300 gallon water tanker truck. Although low mileage, the truck was in poor condition due to the nature of its use, watering City trees. It was replaced with a 2002 Freightliner FL-70 LPG powered water truck. Due to the extensive idling time, the conversion of this particular vehicle to a clean fuel model will result in significant emissions reductions. It is estimated it will operate 600 to 700 hours per year. The second truck to be replaced was a 1986 Chevrolet C-30, 2 cubic yard capacity dump truck. Due to a change in engine specifications, the City purchased a CNG vehicle rather than a LNG. The replacement vehicle is a 2002 GMC Model TC36003 dedicated CNG dump truck. It is estimated that this vehicle will travel a minimum of 20,000 miles per year.
