The City of Burbank is committed to cleaning the air in the South Coast Air Basin by the use of alternative fuel vehicles in its fleets. When the Citys alternative fuel vehicle program is fully implemented, it will include a fleet of over 100 alternative fuel vehicles. Complimenting the Citys alternative fuel vehicles program is a state of the art compressed natural gas (CNG) fueling station which was commissioned for 24-hour public service on April 22, 2002.

The City of Burbank solicited competitive bids and awarded the bid to the lowest responsible bidder.
The objective of the project was to purchase nine (9) heavy-duty CNG vehicles. These vehicles are part of an on-going commitment to implement a CNG fleet including municipal street sweepers, chippers, flatbeds, aerial device trucks, leaf loaders, refuse haulers and passenger vehicles that operate throughout the Burbank/Glendale areas. These vehicles serve as the anchor fleet to support the Citys new CNG fueling station. Purchased vehicles under this project include six (6) autocar refuse trucks equipped with Cummins CG8.3, 280 hp dedicated CNG engines and three (3) freightliner street sweepers equipped with Cummins B5.9G, 230 hp dedicated CNG engines. The refuse trucks have a life expectancy of 10 years each traveling 12,000 miles per year and the street sweepers have a 10 year life expectancy each traveling 10,400 miles per year.
The vehicles have been placed into service. To support the fleet, the City has trained and certified over 100 of its staff on the proper methods of fueling and operating procedures for CNG vehicles. Further information on the scope of the Citys project and its conclusions can be found in its Final Report.
