Matching Funds Available to Local Governments for Clean Transportation Projects

DIAMOND BAR, Calif. March 16, 2007 - With the recent passage of the state transportation bonds, transportation and its effect on air quality are fresh on the minds of Southland residents. The Mobile Source Air Pollution Reduction Review Committee (MSRC)'s Local Government Match Program is designed to help local governments fund transportation projects that will help improve air quality. This program offers to match local government funds for alternative fuel infrastructure and heavy-duty vehicle projects. These matching funds are available exclusively to cities and counties within the South Coast Air Quality Management District that utilize their Motor Vehicle Registration Fee Subvention Funds. The MSRC's Local Government Match Program will contribute a "dollar for dollar" match in Clean Transportation Funding towards qualifying projects. There are three categories of eligible projects: constructing, expanding or upgrading alternative fuel infrastructure; purchasing low-emission, clean fuel heavy-duty vehicles; and street sweeping projects that will use low-emission alternative fuel street sweeping vehicles. There is $2 million in Clean Transportation Funding available through this program. "We want to encourage local governments to invest in alternative fuel vehicles and infrastructure, and the MSRC's Local Government Match Program gives local agencies this opportunity," said MSRC Chair Gwenn Norton-Perry. "Investing in these local air projects will help all of our communities by improving air quality for everyone." The MSRC will begin accepting applications on March 13, 2007, and the last date to submit an application will be June 29, 2007. Funding is awarded on a first-come, first-served basis for eligible projects. For more information, please visit the MSRC's website at www.CleanTransportationFunding.org
