CNG School Bus Buydown Program

School districts and school transportation providers within the South Coast Air Quality Management District can benefit from buy-down incentive funds up to $60,000 per vehicle toward the purchase of clean compressed natural gas school buses.

A total of $2 million in incentive funding is available to purchase CNG school buses. The incentive monies go directly to each school bus vendor to buy-down the cost of a bus, which is then available for purchase at a lower cost. Bus purchasers do not need to apply for Clean Transportation Funding to receive this benefit. Three types of CNG school buses are available to receive buy-down incentives in various amounts (not all vendors offer all of the school bus types). These are:
  • Heavy-duty full size Type D buses - $60,000 incentive
  • Heavy-duty mid-size Type D buses - $50,000 incentive
  • Heavy-duty (gross vehicle weight of 14,050 lbs) Type A buses - $25,000 incentive
Three bus vendors have been qualified to participate in the program:
  • A-Z Bus Sales, Colton - 951-781-7188. A-Z Bus Sales is the local distributor for Blue Bird CNG buses
  • California Bus Sales, Fresno - 559-266-0167. California Bus Sales is a distributor of Thomas Built full and mid-size Type D vehicles
  • BusWest, Santa Fe Springs - 562-447-1280. BusWest offers Thomas Built full and mid-sized Type D vehicles
The MSRC began its first alternative fuel school bus incentive program in 1994 with the goal of replacing older, diesel or gasoline Type I school buses with new low-emission, original equipment manufacturer (OEM) dedicated CNG school buses.
