Project Implementation

Over a period of approximately eight months, Fox Transportation procured 20 model year 2012 Isuzu KE23 CNG medium heavy-duty trucks equipped with the Greenkraft natural gas engine. During that period, Fox also developed a public outreach and education plan associated with the deployment of the natural gas trucks. On Tuesday, March 12, 2013, Fox unveiled their first CNG truck at McKesson Distribution Center.

Project Objectives

The purpose of this project was to procure twenty (20) alternative-fuel medium heavy-duty trucks equipped with low-emission compressed natural gas (CNG) engines in lieu of diesel engines. The trucks are used in pharmaceutical and medical supply deliveries throughout the greater South Coast region.

Project Results Description

Fox Transportation has not reported any significant technical issues associated with the deployment of the CNG-fueled trucks. The new vehicles emit significantly lower levels of ozone precursor emissions as compared to diesel-fueled trucks and no toxic air contaminant emissions. Fox also reports better maintainability with the new engines as compared to their older, diesel-fueled truck engines.

Project Status Description

All trucks have been delivered and placed into revenue service. To date, no technical issues have been identified by Fox Transportation. The only programmatic issue encountered during project performance was scheduling conflicts that arose between the project vendors. The production of the first truck units required on the order of three times the expected assembly time - this was subsequently corrected in subsequent units as a result of better coordination, implementation of best practices, and process streamlining.
