Project Background

Waste Management Collection and Recycling has been a local and national leader in the deployment of low emission, clean fuel solid waste collection vehicles. Waste Management has established strong working relations with heavy-duty alternative fuel vehicle manufacturers and continues to grow its natural gas refuse collection fleets with trucks equipped with the Cummins Westport ISL G natural gas engine, currently the lowest-emitting heavy-duty engine commercially available.

Project Implementation

Waste Management purchased eight (8) new CNG refuse trucks. Seven (7) model year 2008 Autocar WXR64 trucks were deployed at the Waste Management Irvine facility. One (1) model year 2011 Freightliner M2112 CNG bin delivery vehicle was deployed at the Waste Management Moreno Valley facility.

Project Objectives

The purpose of this project was to reduce emissions from heavy-duty refuse collection vehicles by purchasing and deploying vehicles equipped with low emission compressed natural gas (CNG) engines.

Project Results Description

All eight vehicles are currently operating in revenue service and will remain within the South Coast AQMD jurisdiction for a minimum of five years. The new vehicles significantly reduce exposure to toxic diesel exhaust in the residential and commercial areas they serve. Waste Management estimates that the eight trucks displace a total of approximately 57,324 equivalent diesel gallons; at the end of the five year vehicle life, approximately 286,620 gallons of diesel fuel will have been displaced.

Additionally, the new trucks reduce carbon dioxide emissions, a greenhouse gas, compared to diesel trucks. Based on the most recent data from the California Air Resources Board's Low Carbon Fuel Standard "Well to Wheels" transportation assessment, the CNG trucks will achieve a 20% greenhouse gas reduction as compared to similar trucks operating on ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel.
