San Fernando Mayor to help direct Clean Transportation Funding for region

DIAMOND BAR, Calif. - San Fernando Mayor Steve Veres has been named to the Mobile Source Air Pollution Reduction Review Committee (MSRC). The eight-member MSRC allocates approximately $14 million annually to clean transportation projects in the South Coast Air District, which includes all or portions of Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino Counties.

Veres, who has served on the San Fernando City Council since 2003, represents the Metropolitan Transportation Authority in his capacity as a member of the MSRC.

"Good transportation is the foundation of a good community," said Veres. "I'm looking forward to helping my own community, and communities across the Southland, learn more about Clean Transportation Funding from the MSRC and the many different ways we can improve the quality of life by improving our transportation systems."

The MSRC, now in its 20th year, allocates funding from a surcharge on vehicle license fees, specifically to be used for local projects designed to reduce air pollution from mobile sources such as cars, trucks and buses. About $250 million has been distributed for air pollution-reduction programs since the MSRC was established in 1990. Funding from the MSRC is heavily leveraged with investments from government agencies, as well as private sources, with billions of additional dollars contributed to projects throughout the region.

Since his election to the Council, Veres led the development of the city's first park in nearly 30 years, a 3-acre heritage park focusing on water conservation and water resources, as well as pedestrian improvements in the downtown area and the planning and future development of a bike and walking path along the Pacoima Wash. Veres was a director of the Metropolitan Water District for three years, served on the board of the Coalition for Clean Air. He is also the City's Representative to the MTA San Fernando Valley Governance Council.
