The City of San Bernardino is committed to the goal of cleaner air and a healthier environment by reducing air pollution from motor vehicles. To this end, the City determined it would replace seven of its aging gasoline-powered medium-duty municipal fleet vehicles with new alternative fuel vehicles. Vehicles to be replaced included four (4) 1995 gasoline powered Ford Ranger pick up trucks, a 1989 Dodge pick up truck, a 1985 Chevy pick-up truck, and a 1988 Dodge passenger van. The City also determined a need to purchase an additional cargo van for use as a camera van for the sewers department. The City of San Bernardino will have its own compressed natural gas (CNG) station in operation by mid 2006.

The City of San Bernardino entered into a negotiated purchase with Wondries Fleet Group of Alhambra, California for the purchase of the vehicles.
The objective of this project was to purchase eight alternative fuel vehicles including six Ford F-150 CNG pick up trucks, one (1) Ford E350 CNG cargo van, and one (1) Ford E350 CNG passenger Van. Each vehicle has a life expectancy of eight years and estimated annual mileage of 10,000 miles.
The eight CNG vehicles are in service. City staff has recommended to management that CNG-LNG vehicles be considered for all new vehicle purchases. The City is also training its employees on safe CNG vehicle repair and is investigating what changes need to be made to its repair shop for CNG vehicle repair. The Final Report includes a summary, recommendations and conclusions on this project.
