The City used its competitive bid process to purchase the vehicle.
The objective of this project was to purchase two alternative fuel vehicles one medium duty and one heavy duty. However, the City was unable to locate a medium duty vehicle to meet its requirements. The proposed heavy-duty truck is a Ford F-550 with a 6.8L, 265 hp, liquid propane gas (LPG) engine. The vehicle has a life expectancy of fifteen years and an estimated annual mileage of 4,500 miles.
The vehicle was delivered on February 7, 2002 and sent to be equipped for service. A service body, rack, crane with outriggers, and welder were added. The finished truck was inspected, tested and placed into service in August 2002. At the time of this report, the truck had provided 2,037 miles of problem free service. The City was unable to locate a medium duty truck within the time frame of the contract. Loma Linda conducted a nationwide search for a vehicle which ultimately found two vehicles, one in Oklahoma the other in California. An order was placed for the less expensive vehicle in Oklahoma. Unfortunately, the vehicle was unable to meet CARB certification standards. As the time limit for the contract had expired, the City determined it would continue its pursuit of a vehicle and submit an application under another funding cycle.
