The City of Monterey Park supports the goals of clean air and a healthier environment through the use of alternative fuel vehicles. It is the Citys intent to replace its conventional fueled vehicles with alternative fuel vehicles when feasible.

Monterey Park followed its procurement procedures to purchase the vehicles. Two bids were received in response to the RFP that was released. An award was made to the lowest bidder, Pasadena Ford. The original proposal intended to purchase 2001 Chevrolet dedicated CNG Silverado pick-up trucks but that model was not available at the time of bid. In the future, it is likely that joint purchases with other local jurisdictions could result in lower costs.
The objective of the project was to purchase two (2) medium-duty Ford F-150 dedicated compressed natural gas (CNG) pickup trucks with 5.4L, 195 hp engines. Each vehicle has a life expectancy of 10 years averaging 8,000 miles per year. The vehicles will be refueled at the CNG station on Eastern Avenue in East Los Angeles until a CNG station is installed in the Citys corporate yard. The pickups will be used for local street maintenance.
The vehicles were placed into service in May 2002. Unfortunately, the City had a negative experience with the first generation of alternative vehicles purchased in 1991. It was hoped that home-based fueling and original equipment manufactured (OEM) CNG vehicles would change employee perspective. This was the case, as operators of the new vehicles are pleased with their performance and have found them to be more reliable then the first generation of conversion models.
