The City of Santa Ana is committed to cleaning the air in the South Coast Air Basin and increasing the liveability of the citizens of Santa Ana. To this end, the City resolved to construct a compressed natural gas (CNG) slow-fill fueling station and consider the purchase of alternative fuel vehicles when replacing its fleet.

The City of Santa Ana prepared specifications, solicited competitive bids and awarded the bids to the lowest responsible bidders.
The objective of the project was to purchase four (4) Elgin Broom Bear CNG Street Sweepers with Cummins 8.3G+ engines and construct a four station, time fill, CNG fueling station. The life expectancy of each vehicle is 5 years with annual mileage of 4,120 for each vehicle. The station will be located at the City Yard and is not open to the public.
The City plans to maintain and operate the CNG fueling station and continue to purchase alternative fuel vehicles for its fleet. Barring any unforeseen budget issues, the City intends to purchase two new heavy-duty CNG vehicles annually for the next four years.
The street sweepers arrived in July 2003 and were operational in 2004. The construction of the fueling station was complete in May 2003. Further information on the scope of the Citys project and its conclusions can be found in its Final Report.
