The City of Ontario has operated a compressed natural gas (CNG) fueling station since 1994. The station is available for public and private use and is available to any one who wants to participate in a clean fuels program. An active participant in clean air programs, the City currently operates a fleet of 47 CNG vehicles ranging from light duty pick-ups to commercial refuse haulers.

The City of Ontario prepared specifications, solicited competitive bids and awarded the bid to the lowest responsible bidder.
The purpose of this project is to upgrade the Citys existing compressed natural gas (CNG) station and add an additional dispenser. With these upgrades the City hopes to increase the number of vehicles in its CNG fleet, minimize impact on operating fuel times, and reduce the cost of fuel by increasing the number of vehicles that can fuel out of peak hours. The project also includes a partnership with Ontario Montclair Unified School District and Chaffey School District to provide them fuel via an underground pipeline that travels from the City Yard across the street to the School Yard.
The City of Ontario has the following recommendations: encourage the State to allow stations to fuel at higher operating pressures, develop programs to train mechanics and technicians in the maintenance and repairs of CNG stations, and continue programs for monetary assistance of station infrastructure.
The City of Ontario has completed its upgrades to the Station. Upgrades include a new compressor, priority panel, credit card reader, and an additional dispenser at the public fueling island. The existing compressor remains in place and will be used to provide additional fuel in high load demands. For system redundancy, an emergency generator has been added. The station is now capable of reading Visa, Mastercard and the City fueling card. Further information on the scope of the Citys project and its conclusions can be found in its Final Report.
