The City of Lawndale has a fleet of 10 CNG vehicles and was using a Clean Energy CNG fueling station near LAX prior to constructing its own station. Staff would spend about 30 minutes for round trip travel several times a week to fuel the vehicles. Ultimately, Lawndale plans to have 100% of its fleet operate on alternative fuels.

The City of Lawndale contracted with Burnett and Burnette to prepare a request for proposal for the construction of the fueling station. In November 2002 Gas Equipment Systems was awarded the construction contract.
The objective of the project was to construct a compressed natural gas (CNG) fueling station capable of providing time fill and fast fill for a projected fleet of 30 CNG vehicles. The station will be located at Lawndales City Yard.
Gas Equipment Systems began construction in mid April 2003. The project was complete in July 2003 and placed into service. The City ran into several issues with the implementation of this project. Initiation of the project was delayed 4-5 months due to a special contract and gas agreement with Southern California Gas. Next, the CNG station had to be rebid in order to reduce equipment and construction costs. There was also a four week delay due to electrical work needed to obtain a permit. Lawndale projects that operating its own station will save about $30,000 annually in wasted staff time as well as fuel savings of nearly $19,000 a year.
