In an effort to reduce vehicle emissions and improve air quality, the Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) has made a commitment to use alternative fuel vehicles in LAWA operations. In 1999, the Board of Airport Commissioners adopted an alternative fuels vehicles program. This policy states in part that LAWA will replace gasoline and diesel powered vehicles and equipment with alternative fuel options whenever feasible. To this end, LAWA is currently operating over 350 alternative fuel vehicles.

LAWA located a street sweeper that fit its specifications, prepared and released a bid, and awarded a contract to the lowest responsible bidder.
The objective of the project was to purchase a Schwarze Model M-6000 SE compressed natural gas (CNG) street sweeper to replace a diesel-powered sweeper that had reached the end of its useful life. The new sweeper is powered by a CNG-fueled Cummins C 8.3G engine. LAWA typically replaces its sweepers every 10 years.
The street sweeper was delivered to LAWA on February 18, 2004 and was put into service on March 3, 2004. LAWA will continue to purchase replacement vehicles and equipment powered by alternative fuels whenever possible. A summary and conclusion and emissions benefits can be found in the Final Report.
