Project Background

The City of Azusa desires to share in regional goals of cleaner air and recognizes the value that clean air has in benefiting the health of Azusas citizens, attracting businesses, and improving the quality of life in Azusa. To this end, on November 18, 2002, the City of Azusa adopted a resolution to purchase four compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles.

Project Implementation

The City of Azusa advertised a competitive bid for the four (4) trucks, awarding contracts to two different vendors. All bidding and purchasing was conducted per City purchasing guidelines and administrative guidelines.

Project Objectives

The objective of the project was to purchase three (3) Ford F-150 pickup trucks equipped with 5.4L V-8 CNG engines and one (1) Ford F-450 Bus Cutaway equipped with a 5.4L CNG engine. The F-150 vehicles have a life expectancy of 10 years with use of approximately 20,000 miles per year per vehicle. The vehicles will be used as part of the Citys Public Works fleet. The Cutaway bus will replace an existing gasoline-powered bus in the Transit Division. The bus will operate approximately 30,000 miles per year with 2,500 hours of operation.

Project Status Description

The CNG vehicles have been delivered and placed into service. The City recommends the following when purchasing vehicles: establish firm delivery parameters during the development of bidding documents; prior to advertising bids, investigate that the selected vehicles are manufactured in a model that has a CARB certified engine; ensure that CNG vehicles will operate at the same level of performance as non-alternative fuel vehicles; and recognize that maintenance and repair of alternative fuel vehicles may require additional training of employees and modification to repair facilities. The Final Report includes a summary and conclusions of the project.
