The City used its competitive bid process to purchase the vehicle.
The objective of this project was to purchase one Chevrolet Silverado 3500 medium duty compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicle with a Vortec 6000 V8 SFI, 300 hp engine. The vehicle has a life expectancy of ten years and an estimated annual mileage of 7,000 miles. The vehicle will be used by the irrigation section of the Parks Department.
The vehicle was placed into service in May 2004. Upon review of bids, it was discovered that the originally proposed CNG vehicle, the Chevrolet 3500 was no longer being manufactured. The closest equivalent that met contract specifications was the Chevrolet 2500 HD. Upon approval from the MSRC, the 2500 was sent to be equipped with a service body and rack, safety light, two-way radio and various other tools, parts and equipment. The City has entered into an agreement with a neighboring municipality to utilize its fast-fill facility.
