Construct CNG Station in Canoga Park

Contract Number

Project Background

The use of low-emission alternative-fuel vehicles in lieu of conventional gasoline and diesel vehicles is an effective strategy for reducing air pollution from motor vehicles. For alternative fuel vehicles to be viable, however, supporting infrastructure is required to dispense the fuel. This project constructed a compressed natural gas (CNG)refueling station to support CNG vehicle operating in the Canoga Park area of Los Angeles County.

Project Implementation

Clean Energy, a natural gas provider, constructed a new, publicly-accessible compressed natural gas refueling station at the Southern California Gas Company base located at 7711 Canoga Avenue in the City of Canoga Park. The refueling facility is comprised of two (2) 350 standard cubic feet per minute (SCFM) IMW compressors, three (3) high pressure CNG storage vessels capable of providing 30,000 SCF of high pressure gas storage, one dual hose dispenser capable of both 3,000 psi and 3,600 psi fill pressures, and a regenerative dryer. The station is covered with a canopy to protect the station users and equipment from weather elements.

Station construction commenced in early August 2005. A delay in station permitting was initially encountered due to concerns raised by the Los Angeles County Fire Department. These concerns were quickly abated and no significant schedule or station cost impacts were experienced.

Project Objectives

The objective of this project was to construct a compressed natural gas refueling station to serve the needs of a growing number of CNG vehicles operating in the Canoga Park area of Los Angeles. The station primarily serves the refueling needs of taxi and shuttle service vehicles; however, private CNG vehicle drivers also utilize the new refueling facility.

Project Results Description

This CNG refueling station is an essential element of supporting infrastructure for an alternative fuel strategy. To avoid double counting of air pollution reduction benefits, emission reductions are accounted for through the operation of alternative fuel vehicles. Thus, emission reductions are not quantified for this project per se.

California
Project Status Description

The station construction was completed on November 23, 2005. During its first few weeks of operation, the station was dispensing approximately 100 equivalent gallons of CNG per day. It is anticipated that this volume will increase as natural gas vehicle operators become aware of the availability of this station. Current station users include CityCab taxi and SuperShuttle.
