In 1994, the Riverside Transit Agency constructed its first compressed natural gas refueling station to service its fleet of 17 CNG buses. Since that time, the RTA fleet of CNG vehicles has increased significantly with the addition of 94 full size buses, thirteen 32-foot commuter buses, five trolleys, and 2 service trucks. RTA's fleet of revenue service vehicles is now 100% compressed natural gas.
To accomodate the Agency's growing fleet of CNG vehicles, new refueling infrastructure was needed to meet the demand for CNG fuel.

The new CNg station is located at the RTA main facility, 1825 Third Street in Riverside. The station is adjacent to the maintenance shop and bus garage. The station is sited to ensure that large 40-foot buses have easy access to the fueling dispensers.
The project consisted of three phases: 1) Planning, design, and technical specification development; 2) installation of underground gas lines; and 3) procurement, construction, and installation of station equipment.
The purpose of this project was to construct a new CNG refueling station to accomodate RTA's growing fleet of alternative fuel vehicles.
According to RTA, the station is now fully functional and operating relatively error free.
The CNG refueling station has been fully implemented. The original RTA CNG station also remains operational for use as a backup facility.
Construction of the station was completed on schedule. Some installation and equipment issues were encountered - a vibration issue required the redesign of station piping and brackets, and the methane detection system sensors were found to contain a factory defect. These issues have been fully addressed.
