Project Background

Hemet Unified School District initiated planning for the construction of an onsite compressed natural gas (CNG)refueling station in 2006. The initial station design included one 250 cubic feet per minute compressor, 15 time-fill dispenser posts, and one quasi fast fill dispenser. The station design was later upgraded to include an additional 12 time-fill dispensing posts.

Other Information
To avoid double counting of emission reductions, benefits associated with an alternative fuel strategy are assigned to the CNG vehicles as opposed to the refueling infrastructure. However, CNG refueling infrastructure is an essential, enabling component of an overall alternative fuel emission reduction strategy.

Project Implementation

The CNG refueling station was constructed to comply with NFPA 52 safety codes and consists of one (1) Greenfield compressor with the ability to add a second compressor when natural gas throughput exceeds 200,000 therms per year.

Project Objectives

The objective of this project was to construct a reliable, permanent station at Hemet Unified School District's new maintenance facility located at 1791 W. Acacia Avenue in Hemet. The station is conveniently located next to the school district's Administrative Headquarters. Hemet Unified currently operates 30 CNG school buses; each bus uses approximately 15-20 diesel equivalent gallons per day. Hemet anticipates the addition of 10 school buses each year for the next 3 to 5 years. All buses are currently fueled at night on a time fill basis.

Project Results Description

The station continues to operate without any technical issues, and supports refueling operations for Hemet's current fleet of 30 CNG school buses.
