Los Angeles County Department of Public Works was awarded a grant to upgrade the traffic signal communications; synchronize traffic signals; develop and implement an interface; and establish communications between the City of Santa Clarita Advance Traffic Management System (ATMS) and Public Works' Information Exchange Network (IEN) software. The IEN is an advanced traffic management system and multijurisdictional network capable of sharing information and control of various traffic control systems and field devices. With the IEN, agencies are able to view current traffic conditions, track incidents, and provide response scenarios to adjust traffic signal timing as needed.

This project has resulted in improved coordination and joint signal operations between the City of Santa Clarita and Los Angeles County Department of Public Works. It has provided the capability to exchange local traffic signal and event data that affect these two jurisdictions resulting in improved management of traffic and thus reducing delays, drivers' frustrations, and most importantly reduction of emissions due to the reduction in delay and idling cars.
