Two new FSP beats were implemented. The first is on State Route 60 between Reservoir Street (LA County Line) and Milliken Avenue. This is designated as Beat 4. The second new beat was implemented on Interstate 215 between Center Street (Riverside County Line) and 2nd Street; this is designated as Beat 6. The drivers of the FSP tow vehicles assist stranded motorists that have run out of fuel, need assistance in changing a flat tire, or require repair of minor mechanical problems. If the problem cannot be fixed by the FSP driver within a short period of time, the disabled vehicle is towed to a location designated by the California Highway Patrol.
The MSRC awarded funding to SANBAG to develop and implement two (2) new FSP beats within San Bernardino County. Each beat utilizes four (4) roving tow trucks to assist stranded motorists.
From the initiation of service in January 2007 until November 2009, 20,679 hours of motorist assist service was provided. The total number of assists provided stranded motorists was 26,287. This equates to an average of 1.19 assists per tow truck per hour of beat operation. Of the 26,287 assists provided during the contact period, approximately 5,050 flat tires were changed, 2,209 our-of-gas motorists were provided free fuel, and 1,044 cars were towed to safety due to overheating.
SANBAG used a competitive bidding process to secure the FSP tow service operators. Two tow service operators were selected and placed under contract with SANBAG. Service on the two new FSP beats commenced January 3, 2007 and has been operated during peak morning and afternoon commute hours. The length of FSP Beat 4 and 6 have a combined total length of 17.82 centerline miles.
