Other Information
The emission reductions attributable to an alternative fuel strategy are typically allocated to the vehicles as opposed to the enabling refueling infrastructure. This is to avoid the potential for "double-counting" emission reductions. However, the availability of reliable, convenient alternative fuel refueling stations is an essential element of a successful low-emission vehicle program.

Project Implementation

Rainbow Disposal has a growing fleet of CNG refuse collection vehicle and thus needed to ensure that the new CNG refueling station would accommodate fleet expansion. The following design criteria were established for the CNG station:

The site location selected for installing the station compressors was sufficiently large to allow doubling of the compressor capacity to accommodate future growth;

Redundant compressors were used to ensure operational availability. The compressors were sized to allow refueling of up to 90 trucks in an eight hour period;

Fuel storage capacities were designed to allow Rainbow Disposal vehicles to be fueled during a 24-hour time period in the event of emergency situations;

Fuel Dispenser posts were designed to accommodate flexibility in vehicle position - if the driver parks his vehicle within the designated "white lines", the vehicle can be connected to the refueling hose irrespective of whether the truck was backed in or driven straight into the parking space.

Project Objectives

The purpose of this project was to design, construct, and operated a compressed natural gas (CNG) refueling station that met the operational requirements of Rainbow Disposal's fleet of 31 CNG refuse collection vehicles while allowing public access to other users on a 24/7 basis.

Project Results Description

Emission levels after implementation of the natural gas vehicle strategy are approximately 53% lower in NOx emissions and 96% lower in particulate matter emissions. Approximately 108,680 fewer gallons of diesel fuel were consumed which further reduces both criteria pollutant and greenhouse gas emissions.
