Republic Services (dba Allied Waste Services) has been serving the communities in the South Coast Air District for more than five decades, providing refuse collection service to more than 2.5 million customers each month. Republic recognizes its responsibility to minimize its environmental impact in the communities it serves. Waste collected by Republic collection divisions is initially brought to Republic Material Recovery Facilities so that reyclables can be removed from the waste stream and converted back to useful products and materials.
In addition to recycling, the use of low emission vehicles is an important enviromental strategy for Republic Services. Republic operates and maintains a fleet of 459 natural gas vehicles and is one of the largest private CNG fleets in the nation. This summary describes the recent acquistion of forty compressed natural gas refuse collection trucks, each equipped with a state of the art low emission natural gas engine.

Republic Services has taken delivery and placed into revenue service all forty new CNG refuse collection trucks. Each vehicle is equipped with the Cummins ISL G natural gas engine. This engine is certified by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) at 0.1 g/bhp-hr for nitrogen oxide emissions, making this engine the lowest-emitting heavy-duty engine commerically available at this time.
Republic services sought to expand their fleet of low-emission compressed natural gas (CNG) refuse collection trucks and sought funding assistance to partially offset the cost of acquiring new, state-of-the-art natural gas engines.
The use of advanced technology natural gas engines results in significant reductions in both criteria air pollutant and greenhouse gas emissions. The forty natural gas trucks will displace approximately 364,000 gallons of diesel fuel annually. Over the lifetime of the fleet, the forty new vehicles will reduce air pollutant emissions by over 80 tons. This is shown in greater detail in the Emisson Benefits section, below.
As of September 1, 2010, Republic Services has received and placed into revenue service all forty (40) new CNG refuse collection vehicles. Republic has not encountered any major problems with the CNG vehicles since deployment. The new vehicles have performed reliably and Republic has received positive feedback from both drivers and customers.
