The City of South Pasadena is an active supporter of the use of alternative fuel vehicles as a means to reduce air pollution. The City has initiated a bus service to link residents to the Gold Line Station. The Gold Link Shuttle program began running in July 2003. At that time, the City contracted with another Agency to run the Gold Link Shuttle Program. In 2006 the City of South Pasadena terminated the Gold Link service contract and transferred the operation in-house with the purchase of two new CNG-powered buses in fiscal year 06/07. The City operates its Gold Link Shuttle Program from Monday to Friday during the hours of 6:20 to 9:00 am and 4:30 to 7:00 pm.

The objective of the project was to purchase two cutaway type CNG and ADA buses with 12 to 15 passenger capacity. With incentive from MSRC and FTA, the City chose to purchase two Ford E450 chassis Type II transit buses equipped with dedicated CNG engines.
Although we have had many problems with the CNG buses, we have two CNG buses that are not contributing to the air pollution in the South Coast Air Quality Basin. In the future instead of purchasing CNG conversion vehicles, we will only purchase Original Equipment Manufacturer products.
