Project Background

The City of Moreno Valley purchased a CNG storm drain and catch basin cleaning truck for replacement of the current storm drain cleaning truck. The truck to be replaced was purchased in 1988 and was in poor mechanical condition and required expensive repairs due to longevity and wear. This vehicle is an intricate part of the Citys National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit program that is required under the Federal Clean Water Act. Over a 1 year period, the City of Moreno Valley completed the bidding, award, delivery, public outreach plan and education, quarterly reports and final report associated with the purchase of the CNG storm drain and catch basin cleaning truck to replace an existing 1988 model that had reached the end of its useful life. The purchase of the new CNG truck has shown a significant decrease in emissions. The existing truck was a 1988 diesel model with a diesel pony engine; neither of which had a diesel particulate filter. The old truck was operated approximately 137 hours per year putting out approximately 1,781 pounds (PM) carcinogenic soot and 26,279 pounds of NOx per year on the front engine. The pony motor added 16 pounds (PM) of carcinogenic soot and 281 pounds of NOx annually. The new Camel 200 is CNG powered and produces only 4 pounds of PM and 45 pounds of NOx. This is an annual reduction of 17,930 pounds (PM) carcinogenic soot and a total reduction of 265,150 NOx over a 10-year life cycle.
