The City of Commerce began the planning process for their new liquefied natural gas/compressed natural gas (L/CNG) facility in 2003. The effort has resulted in the construction of a new L/CNG facility located at the Los Angeles County Sanitation District's Waste-to-Energy Facility located at 5926 Sheila Street in the City of Commerce.

Construction of the new facility commenced in April 2010. The project experienced modest delays due to permit reviews, rainy weather, and the need to recompact soil at the construction site.
Station construction was completed in August 2010, and a station Ribbon Cutting Ceremony was held on August 5, 2010.
The objective of this project was to develop a new natural gas refueling station that would serve the needs of both the City of Commerce as well as other private and municipal users. Importantly, the use of low-emission natural gas vehicles allows the City to reduce toxic air pollutant emissions, improving the air quality for both the City of Commerce as well as neigboring communities.
Prior to station construction, the City of Commerce refueled their current fleet of 11 CNG buses at a CNG station located in the City of Bellflower. The new station provides convenient, local refueling for the City of Commerce transit buses and will allow the City to expand their fleet. In addition, private waste collection companies use the L/CNG facility to refuel their LNG refuse collection trucks.
Finally, it is anticipated that the Port of Los Angeles Clean Truck Program will significantly increase the number of LNG trucks used in Port drayage operations. The City of Commerce facility will be a convenient refueling location for Port drayage trucks.
The L/CNG station is fully operational, and no significant technical issues have been reported.
