Project Background

The City of Riverside currently operates a large CNG station with two compressors each 1200 scfm. The number of heavy duty vehicles requiring nightly refueling has increased. The City needs to increase the size of its time fill system by adding 11 dual time fill posts. This addition will provide new fast filling slots and decrease the need for daytime fueling which has increased substantially as larger numbers of commuters are learning about the benefits and cost effectiveness of using natural gas. Refuse trucks, sweepers and other heavy duty vehicles will fuel at the new timefills. This project also includes the purchase of 16 heavy-duty CNG vehicles.

Project Implementation

All eleven (11) dual hose CNG time-fills have been installed and are operational. All new sixteen (16) heavy-duty CNG vehicles have been received and placed into service.

Project Location
The original City Alternative Fueling Station is located at 8095 Lincoln Avenue, Riverside, CA 92504. The new publicly accessible CNG station (ML11036) is located at 5950 Acorn Street, Riverside, CA 92504.
Project Objectives

The project objective was to increase the fast fueling capacity of the City's CNG heavy-duty vehicles and replace old diesel vehicles with new CNG heavy-duty vehicles.

Project Potential

Due to the success of the original CNG station, The installation of a second high volume 24/7 publicly accessible CNG station has been constructed at the City's Water Quality Control Plant. The new station consists of two compressors for fast filling vehicles at two hose dispensers, five dual time-fill posts with 2 hoses each to allow refueling 10 heavy duty vehicles overnight. This second City CNG fueling station location will provide CNG for City vehicles, fueling for businesses and citizens, and promote the purchase and use of clean burning natural gas vehicles. This new CNG station will also continue the City's efforts in improving air quality for our citizens.

Project Results Description

Purchase of heavy-duty vehicles was accomplished between 2009 through 2012 and included: ten (10) CNG refuse trucks, one (1) CNG crane truck, one (1) CNG patch truck and four (4) CNG street sweepers. All vehicles were received and placed into service. Upgrade of the City's existing CNG fueling station included the installation of eleven (11) additional, dual hose CNG time-fills. The time-fills have been installed and are currently in operation.
