To meet AQMD standards (Rules 1186.1, 1193, 1196), the City of Newport Beach adopted an alternative fuel program. The first phase was joining in a public-private partnership with a vendor to install a publicly-accessible compressed natural gas fueling station at the the City's Corporation Yard. The next phase was to replace four diesel refuse trucks with CNG powered vehicles and upgrade the existing maintenance facility to meet the requirements to service the CNG vehicles.

Four vehicles were replaced and the new vehicles began service in May 2010. The maintenance facility upgrade started September 2010 and was complete June 14, 2011.
The objective of this project was to purchase four new CNG refuse vehicles and upgrade the current equipment maintenance facility to support the alternatively fueled vehicles.
The process of purchasing the trucks from the proposal process to start of services was about one year. The shop modifications make it possible for staff to work on the CNG powered vehicles in safe and contained environment so that the City can continue to upgrade its existing fleet.
