Bid specifications were prepared detailing the CNG chassis, advanced low emission control compliance, and vehicle performance. A purchase order was created and the vehicle was delivered in December 2009. When the vehicle was delivered it had a few issues with lighting (nothing pertaining to the engine or fuel system) which took some time to correct. The vehicle was placed into service on March 5, 2010. Currently, the CNG truck is utilized daily and no issues have been encountered with respect to vehicle performance.
The objective of this project was to remove a diesel fueled vehicle and replace it with a vehicle equipped with an advanced low emission engine fueled by compressed natural gas.
The truck removed from service was powered by a 1987 Detroit Diesel engine. Using the Air Resources Board (ARB) calculator, we determine this truck is reducing PM emissions by .04 tons annually and NOx emissions by .24 tons annually. This is a conservative estimate because the retired truck engine labels were missing and the emission levels are using the ARB average PM (1.7g/mile) and NOx (22.0g/mile) emission levels.
