In 2010, CR&R was awarded the solid waste collection franchise for the City of Orange. The addition of this contract, as well as the augmentation of existing contracts with the Costa Mesa Sanitary District and the Newport Coast required CR&R to expand its fleet of compressed natural gas (CNG) waste collection vehicles. The CNG fuel requirements associated with the new vehicle acquisitions exceeded the capacity of CR&R's existing CNG station located at 7571 Lampson Avenue in the City of Garden Grove. This necessitated refueling at a commercial CNG station located at a significant distance from the CR&R facility. To remedy the refueling issue, CR&R embarked on an expansion of the existing refueling station to accommodate the increase in fuel throughput.

The project consisted of adding 23 single-hose time fill posts at the Garden Grove facility. The station was originally configured with 28 time fill dispensing posts. CR&R had anticipated the need to expand the station at some future point; the capability to expand the station was built into the original facility layout. Thus, station expansion was relatively straightforward. In addition to the expanded dispensing capacity, site improvements included construction of an approximately 420 linear foot, seven foot high block wall to screen the station from adjacent boulevards, new curbing and landscaping, and additional lighting. Construction began in April 2011 and was completed as of July 2011.
This project involved expanding CR&R's existing CNG refueling station to accommodate the refueling requirements of a growing fleet of CNG solid waste collection vehicles.
CR&R's CNG fueling infrastructure continues to grow as the company and the cities it serves adopt alternative fuel policies.
The newly expanded station began dispensing fuel in August 2011. No significant issues were encountered during construction. The expanded CR&R Lampson station now fuels 51 front loader vehicles each day - these trucks replaced older diesel vehicles that previously serviced the City of Orange, Newport Coast and the Costa Mesa Sanitation District. Fuel throughput over the past 12 months was approximately 380,000 equivalent gallons.
