Modification of Two Maintenance Facilities

Contract Number
MS12059
MSRC Award
$75,000.00
Project Background

The Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) is the County Transportation Commission and County transit property for Orange County. OCTA operates and maintains a fleet of liquefied and compressed natural gas buses.

Other Information
Emission reductions from an alternative fuel vehicle strategy are typically assigned to the vehicle component as opposed to the supporting infrastructure. However, supporting infrastructure, including refueling stations and vehicle maintenance facilities, are essential, enabling elements of the overall clean air strategy.
Project Cost Description

300000

Project Implementation

The existing methane detection equipment was generating numerous false alarms at the two OCTA bus bases. OCTA's installation contractor replaced the existing gas detection sensors and installed new main controller equipment to provide paging and remote viewing capabilities. This new feature allows the methane gas detection system to be monitored from any computer within OCTA's network and provides continuous air sampling for explosive levels of methane gas.

Project Objectives

The objective of this project was to replace existing methane gas detection equipment at the Anaheim Maintenance & Operations Base, located at 1717 E. Via Burton in Anaheim, and the Garden Grove Maintenance and Operations Base located at 11790 Cardinal Circle, garden Grove. The methane detection system is required when maintaining gaseous fuel vehicles in an indoor environment - inadvertent leaks of colorless methane (i.e., natural gas) could pose a fire or explosion hazard if not detected and remedied.

Project Results Description

The new methane detection systems are operating at both OCTA maintenance facilities and no technical problems have been experienced. This has resulted in increased productivity of the maintenance work force.

Project Status Description

The new methane detection system is fully installed and operable. The system is functioning properly and there have been no false alarms recorded.
